Hoshimiya Family Papers, 1910-1968

Tosuke Hoshimiya was born in 1886. A native of Miyagi prefecture, he graduated from Thoku Gakuin and arrived in the United States in 1906. He served as principal for various Japanese language schools in the Los Angeles area (Brawley, Moneta, Torrance, El Segundo, and Los Angeles) until December 1941. He was incarcerated in internment camps at Fort Missoula, Montana, and Lordsburg, New Mexico, until he later joined his family at the Granada Relocation Center in Amache, Colorado. He served as a Japanese language instructor for the Military language program at the University of Michigan, 1945-46. He married Sadayo Hoshimiya (née Nagai) in 1915. She was also a native of Miyagi Prefecture, and she attended Utsunomiya Women's School in Japan and arrived in the United States in 1914. She was a Japanese language school teacher, and she and Tosuke had three children. The collection consists of correspondence, business records, publications, Japanese language instructional materials for children and adult education classes, and other documents about the Hoshimiya family. There are English and Japanese materials in the collection.
